Description
This is a classroom sized HR Diagram which allows students to classify stars by their temperatures and luminosity. You can glue magnets to the back of these or attach it permanently. I like to have my students pick a random star out of a box, research it in class, and then place it in the proper location on the HR diagram. This physical model allows students to visualize the main sequence, the giant branch, the super giants, and white dwarf region. I color code the stars, temperatures, and spectral class labels to represent the physical color of the star which is based on surface temperature:
O - blue
B - light blue / teal
A - white
F - pale yellow / yellow white (I get this effect by printing white and a final top layer of yellow)
G - yellow
K - orange
M - red
I print the graph axis labels & luminosity with white lettering on a black background.
I print the spectral class and temperature on a black background with the corresponding spectral class color.
The original model was missing a decimal on R136a1 (4.7 million instead of 47 million).
