Enjoy this fun and whimsical tea light holder that is perfect for the holiday seasons. The small exposed gear on the base allows you to rotate the layers around the tea light and provides an interactive element beyond the simple silhouettes!
Print Instructions:
- Print everything in PLA, 15% infill, allow parts to fully cool before removing from build plate to ensure everything stays flat.
- I printed the silhouette layers in Overture Glow-in-the-dark filament for my kids. They like the look of it after the lights are turned out for the night!
- Print two of the “Spur gear (26 teeth)” in the base folder.
- Print two of the “Background” and three each of “Foreground” and “Midground” in the silhouette folder. These will need to be heated and “formed” after the prints are finished.
Curving the Silhouettes:
- Heat build plate to 70C and have an empty pop can handy!
- Place the item on the build plate for 10-15 seconds and then form the silhouette to the can lightly to create a curved piece that closely matches the “holders” on the rings.
- The two background mountains should be directly formed to the outside of a standard pop can. This will ensure that the trees and mountain edges directly follow the curved “holder” while looking smooth when installed into the ring.
- The other two silhouettes need much less of a curve. Use the heat to help soften the plastic and provide a light curve to the pieces.
- Insert the silhouettes into the “holders” on their respective rings.
Base Assembly Build Instructions:
Note: When placing gears, take your time and make sure they mesh properly before moving to the next layer.
- Start by placing the two 26-tooth spur gears and the central stacked gear on the axels starting from the axel closest to the edge with the perimeter gap and work towards the center.
- Place the largest of the outer three ring gears and the largest carrier gear onto the axel and ring guides.
- Place the second largest of the outer three ring gears and the second largest carrier gear onto the axel and ring guides.
- Place the smallest of the outer three ring gears and the smallest carrier gear onto the axel and ring guides.
- Place the top onto the assembly and then use 2 M3 4-6mm length screws to secure the assembly.
