Torus Weave Tub (vase mode!)

Ahoy-hoy, vase mode fans!

I was, of course, trying to design something entirely different when I got the inspiration for this one. That is often how it goes, but it's invariably a good idea to run with it and see where it might lead!

I had been making a bowl design that did share an element with this tub - curvy elements that emerge from and disappear into each other. But I shifted from the kind of organic scaling-and-squishing that I'd been exploring and instead started arranging torus sections so that they cut into those around them, and were cut through in turn.

Interestingly enough, though, while I loved the result that was only half the battle! The inside of the box - being vase mode - was a ridiculous mess that reflected the overly-detailed exterior. And so the process of simplifying began, especially removing detail that simply wasn't visible from the outside anyway. Of course, each change had to make sure to preserve the vase mode printability of the model, because the alternative would have been to just let problems (like islands and peaks) appear, and hope to find them all…

Print Description

This is a vase mode print, so set your slicer accordingly!

Print Dimensions

By default the model occupies 140mm x 140mm on the print bed and is 142mm tall, but as a vase mode print it can be scaled arbitrarily!

Supports Needed?

Not at all!  Designed for straightforward printing!

Scalability

Being a vase mode print, the Torus Weave Tub will scale up or down fairly easily!

Print Orientation

As you would expect for a vase mode print, the Torus Weave Tub prints right-way-up.

Further Thoughts

I'll often work on vase mode designs like this but lament the fact that the end result will of course not be terribly strong. But I wonder how things would go if the outer shell was modelled as a thin layer that was then incorporated into a regular print... only one way to find out :)
