Description
I like the step test solution from @ajax, but I want a way to integrate the step test with a more common filament sample card. My solution is to remix the step test blocks slightly to adapt to my new filament sample cards. Then I designed a new filament sample card and added two snap-in slots to hold both the step test and the solid blocks. This allows me to add text to the sample card and securely store the associated test blocks with filament details. I thought about remixing the official light box to hold these sample cards, but decided to think outside the box and come up with a new design that used one of the many mini tactical LED lights I already have (LED tactical light 1 ,LED tactical light 2 ). I made the new lighting device with revised step identification scales that made it easier for my addled eyes to view. ymmv.
You can find the remixed step test and solid blocks at this link:

They differ slightly from the original by integrating a minor indexing system that makes stacking the blocks more secure. The originals should work fine too.
The new filament sample card is designed to slide into an indexed side slot on the light tube/frame assembly. The slots on the sample card have indexing pins to securely store the step/solid blocks. In my testing, if the filament is more transparent then you slide the solid block into the outside card slot and step, then you can lay the step block on top. If the filament is not too transparent, then I usually store the step block in the outside slot and the solid block in the inside slot.
I included both a blank filament sample card and one with text on it. The text can be easily modified in PrusaSlicer for whatever brand/name you need. In the future I will add additional features to the card that display filament printing characteristics.
For the light tube, I printed my version as a print in place unit where the white light tube is printed along with the black frame. I also included versions of the light tube and frame as separate models in case you want to print them separately and then glue them together.
