James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) Mirror Assembly Model

With the success of the JWST launch, I thought it would be cool to have a desktop model of the JWST mirror assembly to display on my desk. The model is designed to be printed in two major parts, to facilitate the base and the mirror to be printed in two different colors. The mirror pieces can simply be fitted into the model or glued (0.15mm clearance at full scale for mirror to base). I have also included the model file in the event that any customizations need to be made (for scaling, etc.).

I have included both the full mirror set stl as well as each individual mirror component stl. For individual mirrors, you will need six (6) of each (for a total of 18) for the complete model.

I printed the model at 0.2mm layer height, 10% gyroid infill, in Prusament PLA, although you could go finer in layer height to give the mirror curvature a smoother finish. No overhangs exist over 45 deg so, no supports are needed.

NOTE: To print on a Prusa MINI/MINI+, the model can be scaled to 92.5% to allow for printing within the 180mm x 180mm printing volume. I have verified the clearance on my MINI, and the mirror pieces fit into the base nicely still at that scale. Don't forget to scale both the base and the mirrors to 92.5%.

EDIT: I added a new file for the base that refines the shape of the base model to be more accurate. The file is “JWST_mirror_assy_v18_base.stl” and acoompanying model file (v18) . This base file can be used with the v14 mirror files/files.
