Flow Speed Test   10-Minute Print, 9g Filament

Overview:

This flow test is designed to evaluate the extrusion consistency of your 3D printer by printing a simple triangle-shaped structure with 10 speed steps, each set 25mm/s apart. The test takes 10 minutes to complete and consumes approximately 9g of filament, making it a quick and efficient way to assess filament flow, layer adhesion, Print temperature and potential under- or over-extrusion issues.

Test Details:

Duration: 6~10 minutes

Filament usage: 9g

Layer height: 0.28mm (you can modify it to change volumetric flow)

Speed steps: 10 steps (increments of 25mm/s)

Speed ranges:

50mm/s to 300mm/s

150mm/s to 400mm/s

Nozzle temperature (PLA): 220°C (modifiable)

Bed temperature: As per filament specifications

Nozzle temperature (PET-G): 245°C (modifiable)

Bed temperature: As per filament specifications

Print speed: Adjusts dynamically per speed step

Available Variants:

This test is available in four combinations to suit different printing speeds and layer heights:

(PLA)

Layer height: 0.28mm – Speed range: 50mm/s to 300mm/s

Layer height: 0.28mm – Speed range: 150mm/s to 400mm/s !These speeds are extreme!

(PET-G)

Layer height: 0.28mm - Speed range: 50mm/s to 300mm/s

Layer height: 0.28mm  – Speed range: 150mm/s to 400mm/s  !These speeds are extreme!

Purpose:

Evaluate flow consistency across different speeds

Evaluate max print speed

Evaluate max flow

Evaluate optimal print temperature at diffrent speeds

test quality of the filamet

Identify under- or over-extrusion issues

Test adhesion and stability at high speeds

Optimize extrusion multipliers for high-speed printing

Recommended Settings:

!!! DONT USE STEALTH MODE !!!

I strongly recommend using my preset settings for this test. If using custom configurations, several adjustments are required for proper execution:

Printer settings > machine limits > maximum federated X > set to 400mm/s

Printer settings > machine limits > maximum federated Y > set to 400mm/s

Filament settings > Cooling > Cooling thresholds > Min print speed > set to 400mm/s

Filament settings > Advanced > Print speed override > Max volumetric speed > set to 60mm³/s

Print settings > Speed > Auto speed (advanced) > set to 400mm/s

Print settings > Skirt and brim > brim > set internal or external brim with minimum width of 3mm

Expected Results:

Smooth and continuous lines across all speed steps

Consistent extrusion with minimal flow variations

Sharp transitions between speed increments

No excessive blobs, gaps, or under-extrusion

Print Quality Considerations (PLA)

If the print surface starts to appear matte, this indicates that the material isn't fully melting before being extruded. This can be caused by either:

Too low printing temperature, preventing proper flow.

Too high of a print speed (volumetric flow), not allowing enough time for the filament to heat up.

However, this effect is still acceptable if surface smoothness is not a priority and you're more focused on speed rather than aesthetics.

On the other hand, if gaps appear in the print or layers fail to bond properly, this means that the maximum parameters have been exceeded for the current temperature. This is a critical issue and indicates that either the speed needs to be reduced or the printing temperature needs to be increased or you shoud use high flow nozzle to ensure proper extrusion.

This test is an excellent benchmark for high-speed printing, helping users fine-tune their flow rate settings and push their printers to optimal performance levels.
