Description

These little bookshelf speakers make use of the popular Dayton Audio PS95 Point Source driver, with a back volume of about 2.5L and port tuned to ~70Hz.

The model is designed to print with the back on the bed and the driver/port openings face up. Print without supports. Extra top and bottom solid layers recommended to fill any gaps from the long bridges (8 each top and bottom solid layers worked well with 0.2mm layer height). Otherwise, print settings and materials are not critical. Some of the interior may get ugly and stringy with so many overhangs and long bridges, but strings don't have any impact on the sound and walls that require large bridges have been made thicker so they can recover and be filled/smoothed with solid top/bottom layers.

Threading speaker wire could be annoying. You could run a lead through the speaker wire hole with a string tied to a paperclip. Use the weight of the paperclip to get the string to come out through the driver opening and then attach that to speaker wire to pull the heavier wire back through. The speaker wire hole should be sealed with hot glue or similar (even for V2, because most speaker terminal plates are not sealed).

To mount the driver first thread long M4 screws through the mounting holes and use the screws to pull M4 nuts into the hex openings (don't over tighten or you will deform the driver mating surface). The nuts should hold in place when you back out the screws, leaving construction similar to threaded inserts or T-nuts.

Polyfill or similar stuffing is recommended to damp some ripples in the response, but is not required.

If building V2, the feet should be printed in TPU or another soft flexible material, with low infill and number of perimeters. Simply press the feet into the holes in the bottom of the cabinet and they should snap into place.

Version 2 updates:

  • Cup and screw holes on the back of the cabinet sized for common 3"/75mm speaker terminal plates. Versions with spring terminals and binding posts are readily available from your favorite dystopian dropshipping marketplace.
  • Holes on the bottom of the cabinet and a model for TPU feet to snap into the holes. This stabilizes the speakers and keeps them from sliding around as easily.
  • More open interior, which compensates for some of the back volume lost to the terminal cup and makes it a little easier to thread the speaker wire through.
