Pennant Column Vase

The elements of a design that give something it's something-ness... it's identity that makes it recognisable as the thing that it is... is something that is a constant point of interest when putting together designs that are supposed to give the impression of something, and this time I was contemplating things that ripple in the breeze.

However, I was also contemplating the constraints of vase mode, so that meant anything that was giving the impression of flapping around would also need to narrow sharply to a point. So, that's what led to the thought of exploring the idea of wrapping something around a hexagonal column. And that in turn led to wondering how to convey the effect of covering a textured form with a wind-blown sheet.

The uncanny valley effect is real! Is it still called the uncanny valley when it's not about human forms? Either way, adding too much detail made things look silly and unrealistic. Adding stress folds and creases just looked awkward and not-quite-right, and so I ended up removing all but the basic vertical ripples and the soft texture passing through from the column underneath, and that worked out much more satisfying. It's still very much a concept piece rather than an actual representation of the dynamics of wind, but the sense of motion and direction is quite satisfying.

The Pennant Column Vase occupies 79mm x 123mm on the print bed and is 166mm tall.

Not at all!  Designed for straightforward printing!

Scalability

As a vase mode print, this one will scale happily up or down!

Print Orientation

As you'd expect for vase mode, the vase prints right-way-up.

Further Thoughts

What I really like about how this came out is the way that there's a sense of something being revealed under something else, like an unwrapping. I wonder how else that could be used?...
