The Music Mover

Description

This is a case/stand for the DJCONTROL MIX by Hercules. Two pieces slide on from either side of the controller to meet in the middle where the sides latch to one another. It has access points to connect a strap if desired. Once the controller is removed from the case, the case then can be used as a stand.

Design

The design came about somewhat by accident - I had to print the dj controller mock up in two pieces because of the print volume and that inspired the design for the case.

I designed this specifically for the Prusa contest which I didn't find until near the entry deadline. It certainly stretched my design software skills to the limit and a bit beyond, making it a great learning experience.

My initial design had a different latching method that failed instantly (as in first try instantly). I then designed a separate latch component for testing and came up with a design that seems much more robust. I've used the test latch as kind of a fidget toy and have probably cycled it over a thousand times now without a failure. I did have a failure in another jig as mentioned in the note below.

Printing

The shell itself would have been fine printed in PLA, but the latch and attachment points could be subject to a fair amount of stress so PETG seems the better choice.

While I would have liked to make this so it didn't require supports. Making the design work was a higher priority than trying to make it support free. I used smart fill to place the support enforcers and used organic supports.

The text was created directly in the slicer so could easily be modified to be a different message.

The hinges for the latches each require a long m3 bolt. The holes are designed so it is a pretty snug fit so a nut at the end of the bolt seems optional to me. Alternately (and the approach I eventually took) is to use two shorter m3 bolts, one per side, for each latch.

The Print settings

  • PETG
  • Perimeters 4
  • Infill 15%
  • Support organic for enforcers only

Note: If the latch seems way difficult to close file some material off where the two pieces interact before closing it. It should still work fine with less material and will be less likely to break when opening. Since you asked, I did break one of my test jigs by forcing it. My final version of the case worked fine with no post processing.
