Description
for mounting the cam cleats on the arched wooden bars on our new sailing boat I hopped into sketchup and made this little riser.
0. photo's
first I took some photos of the underside of a cam cleat and of the profile of the wooden bar with a ruler next to it as scale
1. setting up in sketchup
I imported my photo's into sketchup
rotated them so the ruler was on an axis
and traced them with arcs
2. solids
now the extrude tool is used to make those arcs into solids
3. solid boolean function
now using the subtract tool we can subtract the wooden bar from the riser and end up with a usable object
4. print and test fit
After this step I printed it out and tested the fit.
Everything was perfect until I tried to bolt it on...
**5. spotting errors**
the error I made was that the holes in the bar where I had to bolt it on were not centred and thus the cam cleat was on and angle and the bolts didn't fit.
6. fixing errors
to fix my error, I bolted it on without cam cleat and measured the angle of the top surface with the compass app on my phone. 15° off. let's fix it.
that easy huh?
