Description

this is a mechanical chase light marquee sign, see this video for more information:

Originally made as an Add-On for the 2025 Hackaday Berlin badge (I am not associated with Hackaday, the Skull and Wrenches Logo are Trademarks of Hackaday.com).

The print files come blank without any logo.

parts needed:

  • N20 motor
  • bright LEDs in any form
  • 2 short M3 screws, e.g. 6mm (they are friction fit, no thradmaking needed)

Print tips:

  • the base plate needs to be printed with the first layer being transparent, then the next layers need to be black or at least opaque.
  • The two masks are identical, though it makes sense to flip one copy upside down to have a cleaner surface.
  • Some parts need to be flipped to a flat surface before printing.
  • In my version “light_spreader_transparent” was made using lasercut acrylic, though a transparent print should also work fine to provide a glowing background.

Assembly:

Please see the following exploded diagram of the stack . I also provide a STEP file you can open in most CAD programs to explore the design.
