Description
I needed a cake topper for my wedding, but there was nothing that I could buy that really seemed like it suited us so as a self-proclaimed maker I thought, "I'll just make my own". My wife and I wore some Chuck Taylors for our wedding which is where the idea for this cake-topper came from. I 3D-scanned a chuck (using photogrammetry) and eventually came out with a model I could use. I cleaned it up in Blender and then copied and arranged the sneakers as they are in the 2-pair model.
The print worked just fine on the first go with minimal supports under the toe of the shoe just to make sure it would work. It might be ok without supports, but I haven't tried that yet. It was printed in generic gray PLA with 0.2mm layer height. The layer lines are definitely visible on the top curved surfaces like on the toes of the sneakers, but I didn't mind that too much. It could also be sanded smooth I'm sure if enough time is put into it.
So after some light sanding and a coat of paint primer, I finished the paint-job using acrylic paints and then coated the whole thing in a protective clear-coat.
