Description

My bed was squeaking badly because the original bearings in the tensioner were failing.           I didn't want to wait for an idler from Amazon so I MacGyver'd it (for you youngsters, that means I used what I had). I used two 625ZZ bearings out of a POM wheel and two M3 heat inserts as the bearings' center sleeve. Works great - no squeaks!

If you have a squeak coming from your tensioner, before replacing it, try putting some thin shims (1.5mm?) on top of the 40/20 bed rails between the rails and the front plastic cover that surrounds them. Leave some of the shim exposed so you can yank them easily if it doesn't help. The printer is lacking rigidity here and the frame can warp causing the tensioner idler to sit at an angle which is perhaps an oversight in engineering.

Items used:

  • 2x 625zz bearings (from POM wheel)
  • 4x M3 heated inserts (M3x4mmx5mm)
  • 2x M3x20mm or M3x18mm screws (I used 18mm)

Assembly:

  1. printed in PETG.
  2. install heated inserts into both holes on the outside of the model where the bearings will be held
  3. install the rear M3x20 screw for the tensioner from the inside of the model
  4. place a heat insert into the center of each bearing, sandwich the bearings together, and slide them into the model
  5. install the M3x20 that holds the bearings in place - you may need to back the screw out and thread it back in a few times until all of the heat insert threads align and aren't spreading things apart. When done the bearings and sides of the model should all be sandwiched tightly together but the bearings should be able to spin.
