Description

This is the FilaBilly Dehumidifier.  It's a compact smart device that exracts water from the air.  It's meant to be used in an airtight cabinet to create a low humidity environment for 3D printer filament.

This is the first part of a larger project in progress, the FilaBilly Humidor (FBH).  The FBH is based on the FilaBilly IKEA BILLY-based storage cabinet, augmented with IKEA HÖGBO glass doors and smart device bells and whistles.

The FilaBilly Dehumidifier is an ESPHome smart device based on an ESP32 micro controller.  It connects to your network using Wi-Fi.  You can control it directly with a web browser or integrate it into Home Assistant.  In the future, I intend to also be able to monitor and control it from the FilaBilly Humidor's micro controller.

The FilaBilly Dehumidifier includes a printed circuit board for the electronics. All of the parts use through-holes for easy assembly, and all of the parts should be easy to source.  The Gerber files are included, ready to be sent to your favorite PCB fab.

The FilaBilly Dehumidifier is closely based on Ben Krejci's filament dehumidifier. Ben gets credit for the overall design, the air and water routing through the box, and most of the ESPhome firmware. I would have just used Ben's design except that he started with a CPU cooler that is no longer made. So the FilaBilly Dehumidifier is designed to fit the Noctua NH-U9S cooler.

Resources

I've included a 35 page Assembly Guide  in PDF format.  It lists the parts needed and explains the assembly process. Please read through it before trying to make this box.

The humidor mechanical parts were designed in Fusion 360.  I've included the CAD files in .f3d and .STEP formats.

The 3D printed components are in this collection.

I am writing a series of 'blog posts about the project.  The first post links to the rest.

This project also has a Github repository.  Everything here is also there, and the repository has more, e.g., the PCB KiCad design files and the Assembly Guide sources.

I have a build thread on Mastodon which I update regularly.  Be warned that it's long and it rambles.  Still, if you want to track the project progress, follow the #FilaBillyHumidor hashtag there.

Project Status

The FilaBilly Dehumidifier is a work in progress.  The mechanical assembly feels finished.  The ESPHome firmware is functional, but it doesn't meet all the requirements for the Made for ESPHome label yet.  I intend to design some brackets to clip the dehumidifier onto FilaBilly rails.  And the larger FilaBilly Humidor project is mostly theoretical at this point.

Still, I'm publishing now to because it's good enough to use and I want to get some feedback on it.
