Vampire Lord Strahd - Seated (DND / TTRPG)

• May 10, 2025: Added a V2 of him which corrects the size of the left bracer, hand and wine glass which were too small. Also did some harder edges and cleaned other surfaces so it's a different in quite a few ways. Note: Presupported and 3mf files are still v1 versions!

I've been using AI to make models and learn blender since last year. The effort is done in the nooks and crannies of the day when I can find time or burning hours late into the night instead of sleeping. This model started with an AI object generated via Rodin and an AI generated reference image.

Every time I hit another milestone with models I try to do my best with a really nice one. While this one isn't perfect I think it really shows how far I've progressed since later November of last year and I'm super happy to present model #400 "Vampire Lord Strahd - Seated". I made a version of this previously in December and the STL filesize was 120mb. I dabbled a little bit with sculpting but not much. I've come a long way since then :)

For this model I plumped everything up and used sculpt mask / extracts to pull parts of the model out like the cape, fur etc... Only one of the boots from the AI model was viable so I copied and mirrored the good one and popped it onto the other leg. I added demonic hands from my "hands" model set and ornate metal bracers from a yet unpublished "bracers" model pack. I pulled his head off and scaled it up a bit and REALLY struggled with the face. I tried really hard and I need more practice but I think it's an OK result and I'm excited to run have this guy on my table. The AI model also really mangled his legs - crossed legs and AI don't really mix so I did my best to nudge them back into place, filled gaps, added little details to his laces and the chair, strands of hair etc... etc... etc... The I tried to optimize everything. This isn't a purely quad meshed model but it mostly is. I could have done a remesh at the end and another quad mesh but I didn't want to lose my details. Oh also I made the wine glass from a cylinder - it's silly probably couldn't have done that back in December.

Last thing I levelled out the base - so he should sit nicely on a 40mm or 32mm baseplate or overlap a 25mm plate or look tiny on a 50mm baseplate - your choice. I had to extend his cape and foot a bit but smoothed out the edged so it should all still look nice.

I've included the 3mf file for FDM which has a 1x and 2x size. This was printed on a neptune 4 max with a 0.4mm nozzle at 0.08mm, it could be done on a 0.2mm nozzle for better results. I tried printing on my resin printer but it failed at the raft so I'm going through the usual cleaning / troubleshooting steps to try again. If I can figure out how to export the supported prints (using auto-supports) from Lychee Slicer then I'll post those.

In general for FDM I would recommend printing on his back with tree supports. For resin the best practice I've found is printing at a 45 degree angle - I'm still playing with my new resin printer and haven't got into doing manual supports yet.

Edit: I successfully did 4x resin prints. I've included the lychee slicer file here. The ones with medium supports had more support scarring but overall I'm happy with the results. A little sand paper with a mask and in a well ventilated space and the backs of the chairs will clean up nicely!

Edit #2: Added a pre-supported file from my test prints. This used light supports but a TON of them. Was very easy to remove everything.

The first version can be found my printables page or patreon, the source files are there if you want to make your own Strahd. It's way too big so I don't want to repost it but it still makes for a neat model. You may have noticed I increased the size for this V2print - I wanted Strahd to feel imposing so his scale is quite a bit bigger. You could scale down to maybe 35mm height and put him on a baseplate to have a similar effect. Strahd is shape changer so he could absolutely increase his size a bit to be able to "look down" on others even while sitting.
