Description
I am continuing to try out different platform/flat mountain bike pedals that can accept toe clips (with or without modifications or adapters). The K-PEDC mountain/BMX pedals look like they might work out. Of course, they do need adapter brackets to accept toe clips.
The adapters replace one of the reflectors on each pedal. Besides removing those two reflectors, you can also remove the bottom side studs/grip screws. When using toe clips, you don't need the studs on the bottom side of the pedals; thus by removing them, there is less of a risk of them scraping up your leg in an accident (see photos for pedals with bottom studs removed). Also, by removing the bottom studs, you then have spare studs, if needed.
Besides the adapters, you will need the following hardware (stainless steel is preferred):
If necessary, you could use 3/16" hardware, but it is a little loose. 1/4" hardware is too thick and would require drilling out the pedals and adapters. M5 is the best fit for these pedals.
The models are printed in the orientation that they are downloaded. This is not the orientation that the adapters fit into the pedals. See photos for correct orientation (it's easy to figure out, but note that the front piece slides into the slot where the reflector was that was removed). No supports are needed. Do not worry about the thin walls created by the screw holes; they print fine, and the presence of thin walls does not play much of a structural role.
I printed my adapters as follows:
A pair of adapters, each with a front and back piece (4 pieces total), when printed with a 1-loop skirt, used 26.55g of filament, and the total print time was about 55 minutes (including warm-up & calibration).
NOTE: To remove a reflector, look at the exposed bottom side of the reflector. Insert a fine screwdriver behind the reflector body (there is a visible gap). Pry up on the reflector enough to raise the back side above the two retaining tabs on the pedal body. While doing this, on the back side of the reflector, you will see two indentations on the pedal body that will allow you to push on the reflector. As you gently pry up on one side of the reflector, push it out from the other side (with a thumb nail, or other tool).
NOTE: When attaching toe clips (make sure you install the clips in the correct orientation for the R & L pedals; it's easy to install them upside down):
