Sci-Fi Stackable Storage Trays
I wanted strong trays to help organize my work space and I wanted them to look a little industrial and futuristic so I aimed for a Sci-Fi theme. I also wanted to be able to subdivide those trays to get better small part storage and organization, but I didn't want the divider system to get in the way when not in use. I decided to make bins that fit tightly into the tray and can be cut to the exact height desired right in the slicer. This way, you can easily move/remove the bin you need from the tray without having the rest of the tray become disorganized.
Notes
- The thinnest part of the trays is 2.5mm. To reduce print time on unnecessar travel moves, I recommend setting your walls to be just over half of that thickness.
- To further reduce print time and save a little filament on the trays, you can use a height modifier from ~9mm to just under the top lip (~5.5mm less than the overal height) and set the sparse infill to 0%. This should not impact the strength of the print.
- The bins are all in one .3mf file to prevent confusion. You don't need to print all of them, just delete the ones you don't need and cut the rest to your preferred heights.
- I don't recommend scaling the bins as this will alter the corner dimensions and possibly prevent the bins from fitting nicely into the trays. You can cut the bins before slicing in PrusaSlicer or any of its forks.
- The numbers I added to my trays are largely meaningless and not included in the design files, but you can always add your own labels in PrusaSlicer or any of its forks.
- There are small overhangs that should print without supports as long as your cooling settings are dialed in but if you are unsure, “supports on build plate only” should be enough.
- I have included a .STEP file incase you want to customize things further. If you make something cool, please be sure to post a remix!
- I showed two-tone bins here but I don't recommend doing a colour swap on the longer, narrower bins. Because of the flexibility of the pieces, my second colour was slightly misaligned on the red and silver bins, creating a noticeable lip.
