Description

My mother has an Essential Tremor that is quite severe.  Her ability to use a mouse to perform normal computer functions was difficult if not impossible. This mouse design is an expansion of a proof of concept that has been in alpha testing for over a year now.   The initial design was simple, a ⅓ sphere attached by a handle to a box in which a traditional mouse sat. The idea was that the presence of a handle far enough from the actual mouse would allow for a second hand to stabilize and more precisely guide the movements of the pointer on a computer screen effectively cancelling out the effects of her tremor.

The initial design, while wildly successful, was too simple and was only usable with a specific sized mouse. When I found out about this contest, I was inspired to bring the proof of concept into a functional modification for the Saga HyperX mouse.  In addition to implementing the stability handle on the left side of the mouse (for right-handed mouse use, although the model could easily be mirrored for left-handed adaptation), I enlarged the lower bout of the mouse body to make it easier for a shaking hand to rest upon it and grip it while maintaining the internal structure sized to attach to the standard chassis. The stabilizer dummy mouse is also oversized to add to the ability for a shaking hand non-dominant hand to more easily grip and control the movements of the main mouse pointer.

With regard to printing this model, I recommend an orientation that allows for the main mouse body to retain the features that allow it the best adaptation to the chassis.  So far, that has meant keeping it in vertical even though the dummy mouse contact on the plate requires full supports on the butt end of the main body.

Thank you!
