Bring the wonders of a tropical reef straight to your classroom, makerspace or museum display!
This collection contains seven 3-D printable models representing some of the Western Atlantic’s most iconic reef-builders (and one fiery hydrozoan). Each coral sits on a rounded-corner pedestal with raised lettering, so students can handle, label and compare them instantly.

† Fire corals are hydrozoans, but their form and ecological role make them perfect for comparison.

🖨 Printing notes

• Material: PLA or PETG; 0.12 mm layer height yields crisp texture
• Supports: Not required for most pieces; very light tree supports for Staghorn/Elkhorn branches if printed upright
• Infill: 15 – 20 % gyroid (corals) / 10 % lines (bases)
• Orientation: Print bases face-down; orient corals for minimal overhangs – details in PDF
• Approx. time: 2–5 h per coral on a 0.4 mm nozzle
• Tip: Print bases in a neutral grey and corals in natural hues, then dry-brush lighter highlights or paint bleached sections for advanced lessons.

• Form-and-function lab – Have students relate colony shapes to light levels, wave energy or sediment load.
• Threat cards – Pair each model with challenge cards (bleaching, acidification, disease) and discuss resilience strategies.
• Coral taxonomy race – Time teams to match printed specimens to photos and scientific names, reinforcing classification skills.
• Symbiosis spotlight – Use multi-material prints (white core + translucent outer layer) to show how zooxanthellae live in coral tissue.
• Reef-building maths – Measure colony volume with water displacement, then calculate how long real corals would take to grow that mass.
• All activities align with Ocean Literacy Principles #5 (“The ocean supports a great diversity of life”) and #6 (“The ocean and humans are inextricably connected”).
