Description
I saw this posted on Reddit the other day and thought it looked like a really neat creature to model. It has Nightmarish-Kelpie vibes. I intend to run this in my campaign as a Kelpie and will modify the statblock to fit that theme a bit more but I've included the source material Dreamare statblock. This creature is from Ariadne's Codex of Strings - Chapter 20 of "INTO THE STORM" - I reached out to them on Reddit and received permission to post this with credit back to them.
For my process I started with a base mesh from an AI service that gives me the general shape then I pose and sculpt the details. I spent a few hours here playing with this and added some subdivided / extruded cubes for the hair strands. I'm sure there are artists that could do much much much better but I had fun doing this and typically aim for making models FDM friendly (because I usually prefer this for minis as they're more kid safe/won't shatter when they fall off a table).
My first test print had lost limbs and hair so I reworked the model to be much much larger on the baseplate and tried again. For FDM at 0.2mm on a 0.4mm nozzle it's still pretty tricky to clear the thin tree supports without losing parts but some super glue goes a long way. There is a lot of small detail here so it does take a while to print so I didn't try a smaller layer height but I suspect it'd work better with that or with Resin supports for FDM.
This create is large so it's on a 50mm baseplate - it's pretty tall too at about 75mm in height it's very imposing.
If I were to revisit this model I might make it's head a bit bigger and some of the legs - I think a curved/turning pose would be good too to keep the model in the bounds of the baseplate and to give the Dreamare more of fluid posture.
The City of Mirrors has an abundance of Dreamares, as the mad inhabitants are prime pickings for a nightmare-inducing predator. This subset of Dreamares has sprouted a new pair of legs, become immune to psychic attacks, and of course, acquired the ability to speak that godforsaken tongue of the void we've taken to calling deep speech.
