Description
Thanks to @baeoniq_384107 for the original idea spark. I like the idea of a “hobo” fishing reel for backpacking but I wanted a version that I could throw in my bag without thinking about weight and at 130g the original is a bit too heavy for that kind of carefree use. This design weighs 44g as pictured. I settled on a 6.5in length of 1" PVC pipe with is completely usable by itself but with plugs on either end you can store bait and tackle in the handle for ultimate “toss in your bag and go” functionality.
The plugs are designed for an interference fit so print the test piece to dial the exact scaling required to achieve a firm but easily removable fit on your PVC pipe. The plugs also have tether points to tie them together through the PVC for loss prevention. To attach the line I tied the standard arbor (slip) knot, wrapped around the PVC a few times and taped it in place with Gorilla/duct tape before winding on ~60ft of 10lb fishing line. Finally, the top cap is designed with a slot to allow line to pass into the handle for storage of your hook, lure, bobber, etc without breaking everything down. I used a velcro cable tie to secure and protect the line from nicks in my bag.
