A tip jar link is provided below for anyone who wants to support the work that went into the cleanup and reconstruction of this model.
This is a full-scale 3D-printable version of the Löwenmensch figurine — one of the world’s oldest known sculptures, discovered in a German cave and believed to be over 40,000 years old. The original artifact is held by the Ulm Museum in Germany.
This model is primarily based on a scan of the 2013 reconstruction of the artifact. The 2013 reconstruction is not suitable for printing in its original form, so I extensively cleaned, repaired, and modified it to make this printable version. The result is intended for educational purposes and to allow anyone to hold and experience this incredible piece of our shared human heritage.
The 1:1 scaling is based on my interpretation of the available literature. Precise dimensional accuracy has not been validated. As such, this model is not intended for research purposes.
Printing Notes:
I have only printed this on an A1 and it just barely fits across the plate when set at a 48-degree diagonal with the model laying on its back. This is also the preferred orientation for strength and display aesthetics.
Printing requires quite a few small supports. I recommend using a nail file and super fine tweezers to remove all them from the nooks and crannies. I could have minimized the supports further, but I actually think it is incredible to see how thin some of the recovered fragments were, so I left some areas of high detail that do require some itty bitty supports. I think the result is worth it.
Disclaimer:
This printable model is based on a 3D scan of the Löwenmensch figurine from the Ulm Museum. The original scan was not publicly distributed. I created a heavily-modified version for non-commercial educational use only. If you represent the rights-holding institution and would like to request removal, please contact me.
