Car Door Trash Bin

March 20, 2025
Description
Small trash bin to install in any door of any car.
Before you start choose the correct size for your car
You need to measure the space available on your car door to install the trash bin and choose the size that best suits you. Isn't the size you need available? Let me know and I'll be happy to add it!
Did you know that I have another trash can to install in the can holder of your car? Check it out!
Necessary materials
- 2x m3 nuts.
- 2x m3 x 30mm screws.
- Small bags, such as these for dog poops 💩.
Printing instructions
You need to print 1 Lid, 1 Bin and 1 Holder of the right size for your car, make sure all 3 parts are named with the same size.
All parts are already oriented to be able to be printed without supports. There are some bridges but they are in non-visible areas.
PLA is not a suitable material for this model since cars reach sufficient temperatures for it to melt, I personally recommend using PETG since it is very easy to print and will more than withstand these temperatures, but you can also use other more resistant materials like ABS or ASA. It is recommended that the holder material has some flexibility, the other parts can be completely rigid.
Assembly instructions
- First insert the two nuts into their holes in the lid.
- Now put the lid and the bin together and proceed to hold them with the screws, do not tighten the screws too much to allow the movement of the lid.
- Insert the bag through the hole of the holder, make sure the opening of the bag is on the side where the holder clips are.
- Fold the edge of the bag over so that it wraps around the holder.
- Insert the holder through the bottom of the bin until the clips hold it in place, the edges of the bag should stay clamped between the holder and the bin.
- Now all you have to do is install the bin on the door of your car.
Changing the bag
- Remove the trash bin from your car door.
- Squeeze the holder in the center until you can pull it out of the bin from the bottom.
- Remove your bag and replace it with a new one the same way you did in steps 4-6 of the assembly instructions.
FAQ:
Why does the hinge require screws instead of a fully 3D-printed solution?
Originally, the hinge was entirely 3D-printed. However, aside from the printing challenges, even when using heat-resistant materials like ABS, the hinges eventually stopped functioning properly or even broke. I believe screws are an accessible solution for everyone, and so far, my longest-running test (since February 2024) is still holding up well.
The available sizes don’t fit my car. How can I get one that does?
Simply request it in the comments section. The design is fully parametric, so I can adjust it to the required size. Just let me know your car’s dimensions (I will always round down slightly to ensure a proper fit), and within a few days, I’ll upload the size you need.
I found a flaw in the design, I'm having trouble printing it, or I think it could be improved…
This is the third iteration of this design (and likely the last), as I’ve been using it for several years without finding any major issues. However, if you have any ideas or encounter problems with the model, let me know, and I’ll consider whether it’s worth designing a new version.
Can I share, modify, sell, etc., this design?
