Description
Disney's Contemporary Resort, which opened its doors on October 1, 1971, alongside Magic Kingdom, stands as a bold and innovative symbol of Walt Disney's vision for the future of living and leisure. It was one of the two original resorts at Walt Disney World (the other being the Polynesian Village Resort) and immediately captivated guests with its striking architecture and groundbreaking construction methods.
The resort's most distinctive feature is its A-frame main tower, a monumental structure with outer walls that slope inward around a vast inner atrium. What made this design truly revolutionary was the method of construction: pre-fabricated modular rooms were built off-site and then lifted by crane and slid into the steel framework of the A-frame. This "plug-and-play" approach was a marvel of engineering at the time, demonstrating a forward-thinking efficiency.
Inside the towering atrium, known as the Grand Canyon Concourse, the resort offers a unique blend of functionality and spectacle. The most famous element is the Walt Disney World Monorail System, which glides directly through the center of the building, stopping at a station on the fourth floor. This seamless integration of transportation into the hotel's core was a vivid realization of Walt's ideas for a technologically advanced, interconnected community
