What is it
A modular speaker grill system that is designed for a speaker build out of an Apache 1800 case with a 4x6 speaker
This setup allows you to easily swap out different grill designs without tools. Whether you're heading to a tailgate, a pool party, or just want a new vibe, you can change the look of your speaker on a whim.
Features:
Magnetically mounted faceplate for quick swaps
Designed to fit snugly over a recessed frame
Great for custom themed grills (sports teams, holidays, or your favorite obnoxious color)
Print the frame once and swap in as many different faceplates as you want.
What you need
I won't go into the speaker build here but below is what you need just for the speaker grill itself
At least 4x 6x3mm Magnets. More for more grills that you make
4x 4mm heat-set inserts (M4xL6xD6)
4x 4mmx screws - The length isn't that important but I think 14mm is the longest before you bottom out.
How to assemble (Make sure you have your magnet polarity right!)
- Print out one outer Ring v2 file to mount to the box
- Print out one Speaker Grill v2 file in your favorite color
- Print out 4x6 Speaker grill template file
- Use the template to mark the hole for your speaker on your box and drill the holes for the grill
- Insert the heat set inserts into the outer ring that you printed
- Insert the magnets into the outer ring PAYING CLOSE ATTENTION TO POLARITY. I've designed this to be press-fit so once you get those magnets in there they aren't coming out without boogering up your print. You've been warned.
- Insert the magnets into the grill file MAKING SURE THAT THE POLARITY IS SUCH THAT THEY WILL ATTRACT TO THE MAGNETS IN THE OUTER RING. Pro tip: The easiest thing to do is stick 4 magnets to the outer ring magnets that you just inserted (hopefully all the same direction) and then press the grill onto the magnets that are stuck to the grill.
- After that all you need to do is to insert the 4mm screws through the inside mounted speaker, through the apache case and screw them into the grill which will sandwich the speaker and the grill with the case between them.
Couple of things of note:
- I'm a terrible designer so if you use my speaker grill design it will only go on one way. I modeled the slots and they weren't perfectly symmetrical so the magnet mounts aren't a perfect square so the grill will only go on one way. Sue me.
- I added a .STEP file of the grill so you can make your own grill if you so desire.
I'll add more grill designs as creativity strikes.
Happy Listening.
