GEN2 Clearance Spacer

Some tables and workbenches might have a beam or lip that obstructs the placement of GEN2 rails, often this can be resolved by adding a 2x4 board, but the clearance spacer is a 3D printable solution. It's design to provide a strong structure with minimal filament consumption.

STEP 1: Understanding Under-Table Installation

Decide how you would like to use your GEN2 storage. Keep in mind that the drawers are modular and can be easily swapped between under table and table top locations. All drawers are available for mounting under the table using rails, but you can also place them on top of any surface with table top kits.

What You'll Need

• Decor Faceplates

HARDWARE

Includes affiliated links to help support my projects
• Filament - Black PETG (My go to for the drawer bodies) or PLA
• M3 nuts and screws: Stainless-Steel or Steel
• Magnets (Optional): 10x2mm or 6x2mm
• Screwdriver
 

UNDER TABLE (GEN2 RAILS) HARDWARE
 • Countersunk woodscrews: (SAE: #6 or #8 up to 1/2" or longer) or (Metric: 3.5x16mm or longer)
• Drill bit that is smaller diameter than the wood screws (My Recommendation)
• Pen, Marker, or Scratch Awl (for installing under tables)
 

INSTRUCTIONS

*Very Important* Make sure you have clearance of 370mm or 14.5" of surface area behind the obstruction under the desk, the GEN2 Clearance Extender Spacer needs to slide into the back of the Clearance Rail.

• Measure how far the front underside obstruction sticks down from your table or workbench. In this example this metal beam under my work bench is 65mm, so I will select the 65mm mode (Rails - Extended_65mm_Spacer.stl)
Note* I've included a Fusion 360 parametric model that can be adjust or modified as needed

• Locate the GEN2 Extender Rail in either 1W or 2W width, this installs almost exactly the same as a normal GEN2 rail, but keep in mind that the spacer will slide in from the back.
Notice the ARROWS embossed in the model, you will want to mount these facing the from of your desk.

• Press the GEN2 Clearance Rail tightly up against the obstruction and mount it to the underside of the surface. You may want to mark and drill some of the holes. Lastly screw the rail in place using at least one screw in each corner, use extra on the 2W rail.

• Install GEN2 QuickLocks into both LEFT and RIGHT sides of the Clearance Extender Spacer

• (Optional) Install Drawer Stoppers into both LEFT and RIGHT slots near the front of the Clearance Extender Spacer. This helps prevent the drawer below from falling out.

• Slide the Clearance Extender Spacer into the Clearance Rail until it clicks in place. (Remove by pulling down on the GEN2 QuickLocks and pull the Clearance Extender Spacer out of the Clearance Rail.

Congratulations! 🎉 you now can install GEN2 drawers into the new GEN2 rails.
