Description

I know there are a number of holders available for the DeWalt batteries but I decided to design/print my own after seeing complaints of “too tight” along with not seeing options for both the 12V and 20V battery sizes, not to mention the excellent holders Festool uploaded here for their own batteries.

Mine should hopefully fit a wider number of batteries, and I am happy to make small changes to fit even more. DeWalt definitely seems to use a number of different molds for their batteries, and their multi-size chargers seem to rely on the electrical contacts for the tight fit, not the battery shapes themselves.

 

Variations

 

I've provided a variety of versions here, but see below for info about using the parametric CAD or to generate even more variations.

  • 12V + 20V
    • Fits both 12V and 20V batteries. Because of this, there is no “latch” version available.
  • 12V
    • Fits 12v batteries, either using the battery's latch, a tight friction fit, or a loose drop-in fit.
    • Also available in the latched version with a 10° forward tilt. These are what I printed for my own under-cabinet mounts.
  • 20V
    • Fits 20V batteries, either using the battery's latch, a tight friction fit, or a loose drop-in fit.
    • Also available in the latched version with a 10° forward tilt. These are what I printed for my own under-cabinet mounts.
    • Note: I don't have any FlexVolt batteries to test with, and I suspect these will be a tighter fit. Please let me know if you have one and find it troublesome to fit. I would love to update my design to be more accommodating. I think they are also wider, and will need some adjustments to the spacing for the multiple-battery configurations.

There are versions available with a debossed logo, as well as files meant to be used with the included separate STL for doing a logo in a different color.

These were designed to be attached using either #6 or drywall screws. Please drop me a note if you have any fit issues, or would like me to add configuration options for additional sizes of screw.

 

Printing Tips

 

I printed mine in Prusament PLA using the standard “0.2mm STRUCTURAL” preset in PrusaSlicer, with the following modification:

  • Adaptive cubic infill
    • Because the lines of this infill occasionally run along the perimeters, it has the effect of acting like a partial extra perimeter, which I suspect is why this infill often ends up being rated the best for strength.

If you have a multi-color printer and are printing the version with a color logo, make sure to drag both the battery holder and logo STL into the slicer together, so it can combine them into a single multi-object part.

If you're using cheaper filament, I would recommend increasing to 3 perimeters and adding a couple extra layers on top/bottom.

I also recommend enabling a brim if you are printing the 3- or 4-battery version, especially the 20V. My 4-battery prints were done on a recently-cleaned Prusa satin bed, and showed a bit of peeling-up at the ends.

 

Parametric CAD

 

You will need a free account to export STLs, but you can find the full parametric CAD at onshape, where you will find additional config options for other scenarios:

  • Compact version not flush with the back of the battery, which saves a small amount of plastic.
  • Disable screw holes.
  • Disable the logo entirely.
  • Adjust tilt angle beyond the 10° examples I've provided here.
  • Tilt forward or back.
    • Back would be useful along with the “loose” fit for under-cabinet options when you don't want to use the latch.
    • Forward is good with “lose” for wall-mount options, and with “latch” for easier access with under-cabinet mounts.
  • Up to 5 batteries (you'll need a really big printer for this).
  • Clone it and remix!
