Description

This is my custom version of a Maker-themed poker chip that functions as a digital contact card. One side features a 3D-printed QR code (linking to any profile or contact info), while the other showcases a personal bi-color logo or design. Inside, it holds a round NFC tag sticker (25mm diameter) to add wireless contact-sharing functionality.

The main innovation is that this chip can be made entirely on a single-extruder 3D printer with a standard 0.4 mm nozzle and one filament swap – no multimaterial setup required.

🪄How?

The chip is composed of two interlocking parts printed separately and then pressed together.

👽Steps if you want to print your version

  1. If you want to do a remix with your logo, you can copy my design from Onshape (you'll need an account). Feel free to modify my design to your liking.
    1. In the design Branch called “SimpleChip”, find the sketch named “LOGO”, delete mine, import your .dxf logo, and adjust it to your liking.
    2. Export the STLs
  2. Generate the STL for your QR code. I recommend using genqrcode.com
    1. Use a 30 mm size and 0.4 mm height – it fits perfectly.

✨Printing Tips

  1. To ensure your QR prints cleanly, especially on the first layer, I suggest:
    1. Calibrate your bed carefully. I used this great guide from TeachingTech.
    2. Lowering the first layer temperature (I used 200 °C)
    3. Slowing down the first layer speed (I used 20 mm/s)
    4. Use high contrast colors
  2. Place the QR in a known position in the slicer, far from the bed probing position (In my case, it is in the middle of the bed). You can print the WR and the top of the coin at the same time, but far from each other.
    1. I recommend a 0.2mm layer height
  3. Make sure to subtract the QR mesh to the base of the coin (black) in your slicer or modeling tool to ensure that you are not printing through the QR code.
    1. Activate Z-hop (0.6 mm recommended) to avoid hitting the QR
    2. Insert a print pause at 1.2 mm height (or at layer 6 if using 0.2 mm layer height). This allows you to insert the tag and swap filament for the top layer.

📺References

  • If you're new to filament swaps or layer pauses, this is a good reference for filament swaps mid-print.
  • And for printing the QR itself, these references were incredibly helpful:
