Description
This is a hide meant to hold moist sphagnum moss, for use in a low-maintenance arid springtail enclosure. It is sized for a Karat 8oz clear PET deli cup to fit onto. (e.g. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0BT9HYYPR ).
For an arid springtail setup, I use an 11.8cup clear tritan container, and adhere the sphagnum holder to the bottom with a few bits of museum putty. Then I add about an inch of completely dry soil-based substrate in the bottom of the tritan container, making sure to push it up under the lip of the sphagnum holder. Then I fill the inner part of the sphagnum holder with moist sphagnum and put the 8oz deli cup over the top. Then I'll add a couple of feeding stations on the other side, with a surplus of food.
The outer part of the enclosure stays fairly low humidity, with the dry substrate. This means you can add a large surplus of food without worrying about it molding. And then the moist sphagnum area is mostly enclosed so it loses moisture slowly, and you don't need to add water too often. This makes for a low maintenance springtail culture that is still quite effective.
UPDATE: 2026-03-29
I updated the model to add small nubbins around the outer edge for the deli cup to sit on. This helps prevent squishing any springtails when putting the deli cup back in place.
