Leftover Filament Spool

Requirements

Can be printed on a MINI in two prints or on a MK2-4 / Core one build plate in one print. 

Filament: ~33g

Time: ~2.5h

Works best for 1.75mm Filament

Use Case

I designed these spools to help organize leftover filament. I had dozens of spools with only ~50g remaining, and I wanted a cleaner, more efficient way to store them than loose coils. These spools are also great for storing sample filament you may have received. They're easy to reuse and assemble as there is no glue or hardware required.

Material Tags

I also designed small filament tags that can be added onto the spools to indicate what was being stored. Currently I have included tags for:

  • PLA
  • PETG
  • (More coming)

Variations

There is a 15mm and 20mm “Mini Spool Bottom”. This measurement is for the total width of the spool. 
 

15mm spool can store ~25g max

20mm spool can store ~45g max

If you need to store larger leftovers, i will be adding larger spools later.  I will also try to add their estimated storage capacity. 

Instructions 

Step 1 - Add The Tag (optional)

Add the Material tag of the filament you're going to store into the “Mini Spool Bottom”. You can press it into any of the cutouts in between the inner and outer walls. 

Step 2 - Add the Top

Press the “Mini Spool Top” into the “Mini Spool Bottom” the locking tabs on the top should slide into the holes in the bottom half. 

Step 3 - Rotate the Top 

Rotate the “Mini Spool Top” counter clockwise until is snaps into place. Depending on how you pressed the two half's together in Step 2 the two half's might align. But don't worry if they don't. 

Step 4 - Prepare Filament

Take the end of the filament you want to store and bend a 90-100 degree angle into the filament. 

Step 5 - Insert the Filament Into Spool 

There is a 2mm hole located on the inside wall of the spool. insert the filament you just bent in Step 5 into that hole. This will prevent the spool from unwinding itself as you wind it. 

Step 6 - Wind Your Filament

Tightly wind the filament around the spool until all your filament is stored. You can secure the end with a filament clip or (my personal method) weave the end into the sides of the roll.
