Description
The existing Gen1 phone charger didn't work at all in my Rivian. I replaced it with a different charger but kept the existing rubber mat to make it look 100% OEM original. I replaced it this way. I easily removed the existing charger, unscrewed the square charger box and replaced it with a MagSafe charger and plugged it into a voltage adapter. It was so easy.
I ordered the voltage adapter from S00nish Step Down Charger – SoonishEV. It plugs in instantly. The wiring is hidden underneath and looks perfect. The voltage adapter allows for 2 connections but my design only allows for 1 MagSafe puck.
The phone might still move around when driving around corners, it doesn't stick well. It works better than the original and keeps everything OEM looking. However, after using this for a week I don’t think MagSafe will work well through the rubber mat. I am now looking for a different solution. I will leave this model here because it has some good information. Going forward I will look for a design or make a design that uses a MagSafe that attaches directly to the phone. Going forward on any new design, I will certainly use the charging pad delete and the voltage converter so that all the wires are hidden.
This fits an Anker MagSafe but it could be easily modified it to fit any puck needed. I used it because it was supposed to work well in difficult areas. I used this Anker MagSafe on Amazon: Anker MagSafe Charger Pad, MagGo iPhone 16 Wireless Charging Pad, Qi2 Certified 15W Wireless Charger.
