The Infamous Demon Core (screwdriver not supplied)
Bring a piece of atomic history to life (safely!) with this full size model of the demon core. This infamous subcritical sphere of plutonium was responsible for fatal accidents during the Manhattan Project.
Why the demon core?
I'd originally conceived this as a gag leaving present screwdriver holder, but when I discovered a paper with the actual dimensions, I decided to make it as realistic as possible. The historical significance and design of this piece made it worth sharing as it is with the wider 3d printing community before I remix it into the screwdriver holder it deserves to be.
Model Details:
- Full Scale: This model is designed to be a 1:1 replica of the actual Demon Core. Be warned: printing at full size will consume approximately 3kg of filament! I highly recommend scaling it down before committing to such a large print unless you're prepared for the filament usage and print time
- Scaled Version Included: For those who prefer a smaller, more desk-friendly version, I've also included a scaled-down set of parts.
- Tolerance Note for Scaled Version: The original model had tight tolerances (0.1mm to 0.2mm). While I've adjusted for the scaled version, your printer's calibration will be key.
- Recommendation: If attempting the scaled print, I strongly advise printing the core and using filament to connect it as opposed to the connectors. They'll be a little too fiddly and small. Or just dispense with the connectors and glue the sides together (or use a silver or light-up ball for maximum effect).Â
- You *may* find it necessary to slightly scale down the dowels, plug, or the core itself (they are currently at 24% compared to 25% for other scaled parts) if your tolerances are too tight. All other scaled components should fit without issue. I've printed these and found the dowels too tight which is why I suggested either scaling them down some more or using filament.
Perfect for:
- History Buffs: A tangible representation of a significant (and dangerous) artifact.
- Science Enthusiasts: A great discussion piece or educational model.Â
- Unique Desk Decor: An eye-catching and conversation-starting item.
- Remixers & Makers: A solid base model for your own creative modifications and projects! (LTT Screwdriver holder, anyone?) Enjoy printing this iconic piece of history!
