Description
Here is a Baldwin “35 HP Gas Mechanical Trench Locomotive”. This was designed loosely based on several prototype photos and uses a somewhat readily available chassis. This model was designed to be printed on a resin 3D printer and uses the Tsugawa TU-DB158 chassis for power. This model will accommodate the stock TU-DB158 chassis as well as the 12V version from Tramfabriek.
Tips for printing:
Print 1 of each file and two sets of headlights and brackets, wash and cure like any other resin model.
Assembly:
What you’ll need: Printed components, Tsugawa chassis, paint, super glue, small file or sand paper (just in case of fitment issues), additional weight, and any additional detail parts you want to add.
Check the fitment of the body on the chassis and make any adjustments necessary. The tab on the front of the chassis should fit into the slot on the front of the body and the wires should hug around the bottom of the motor and tuck up along the sides of the hood/bonnet. Before final assembly add weight to the five pockets in the top of the hood/bonnet. Paint the body and add the headlights to the hood and rear of the cab (use a piece of wire to secure the headlight to the bracket) and add the gear selector (the gear shifter fits into the right rear corner of the cab). Finally add couplings of your choice.
Final notes:
This model isn’t 100% accurate but for what it is I’m happy with it. It was scaled down slightly and some compromises were made to make it better fit the chassis (which is also inside frame instead of outside...) Since details on these locomotives seem to have varied wildly between real life examples I chose a mixture of the ones I liked the best making it a sort of hybrid between the 35hp and 50hp examples.
I decided to leave off any provisions for couplers but extended the front and rear plates up high enough to accommodate several different kinds to not limit its function.
If you have any comments, questions, suggestions, or funny remarks feel free to reach out to me. As always I hope to be sharing more of my models in the future.
Best Regards,
Dr. Fixet
