Description
this is a model to enable the home development of super 8 motion picture film. it holds a single cartridge (50 ft) of super 8 film emulsion side out in 3 layers. printed in transparent material enables fogging using LED strip lights through the core for reversal processing.
printing of this requires the core to be waterproof to minimise the volume of developer used (should need approx 1 Liter) so print with lots of walls and a good squish, supports are required for the spirals, especially the core and mid options since they have greater overhang. print in petg or similar if planning colour or other high temperature processes
to develop with this first push the light trap down the middle of the core, it uses the central piece of the patterson tankl to avoid dealing with light leakage remove the tail of the exposed cartirge from the cart, wrap it around the inner most core (in the dark naturally) at the top, the spiral should lightly clamp the film in place. rotate the core and push the film into the spiral with gloves (its emulsion side out so care needs to be taken) once you reach the bottomslide the mid piece over the core such that the film comes through the slot in the base and continue winding, there is an optional screw hole for an m3 bolt at the top to secure it at this point but the film tension will also hold it. continue likewise up to the top of the mid core then slide the outer over from the bottom, the outer has a selection of bolt holes at the base but youll want to use the smallest/flattest head bolts available to avoid interferience with the tank, test any assemmbly before adding film as you cant turn the light on at any point in this process. once the outer is added continue winding from the top down until the film is exhausted. put on the lid and you are now ready to develop!
this was developed due to the frustration of loding printed horazontal spirals and how easy it was for the film to collapse and be ruined due to failure to get access to developer. this is designed to be qay quicker to load and way more reliable but it is not perfect, i have only developed one spool on this (results here:
) and i will be refining the design as I make revisions. if you have any questions I am building a new reddit community focused on home processing of motion picture film here: https://www.reddit.com/r/CinefilmDIY
