Description
A stave church is a medieval wooden Christian church building once common in north-western Europe. The name derives from the building's timber framing structure where the load-bearing ore-pine posts are called stafr in Old Norse (stav in modern Norwegian). Originally much more widespread, most of the surviving stave churches are in Norway, the one in Heddal being the largest one.
Heddal's triple nave stave church was built around the year 1200 using plans drawn up by an unknown architect, dedicated to the Virgin Mary. It seats about 180 people. After the Reformation, the church was in very poor condition. Major restorations took place in 1850 and later in the 1950s.Â
Heddal Stave Church is a popular tourist attraction, and it is open to the public during the summer season  (from Wikipedia).
