Description
I needed a way to turn on the Crestron CNAMPX-16X60 without any modifications to the amp. This involves:
(1) A 12v trigger from a preamp
(2) A Crestron 24v power supply
(3) The 12v trigger is connected to a programmable relay. When triggered with 12v from a preamp, the relay supplies 24 volts from the Crestron power supply to the amps and 24v to a second programmable relay
(4) The second relay has a programmable delay, which I set to 4 seconds. After 4 seconds, the second relay sends 24 volts (from the Crestron power supply) to a set of micro push pull solenoid electromagnet linear actuators. These actuators push the override button for 1 second, then release. (I have 4 12 volt micro push pull solenoid, wired in series pairs, each series wired in parallel, so each micro push pull solenoid sees 12v).
(5) the first relay stays activated for 1 hour after last receiving a 12v signal from the preamp. After one hour, it terminates the 24v signal to the amps, turning off the amps.
I was motivated to do this because my setup includes 4 CNAMPX-16X60 amps, serving 32 pairs of speakers in 20 separate zones. This was formerly hooked up to a now-useless Crestron system. All 4 CNAMPX-16X60 amps are rack mounted in one location, and de-racking them to do the internal modifications discussed elsewhere and re-racking would have been extremely time consuming.
Here are the parts I used:
Micro Push Pull Solenoid Electromagnet Mini Solenoid Linear Actuator
M2 screws (to mount the solenoid to the 3D printed bracket)
M3 screw (to mount the arm to the bracket)
This Custom 3D printed button pusher (linked on this page)
The push pull solenoid goes into the 3D printed part. The arm is connected to the solenoid with split rings. On the back of the amp adjacent to the override button is a screw. You partially back this screw out and position the 3D printed part, then retighten the screw. That's it.
I have 20 Wiim Pro Plus preamps driving 32 pairs of speakers in 20 zones. I needed any one or all of the Wiims to turn on all of the amps at once and leave them on if any Wiim is on. To do this, I wired inline diodes to the (+) from each Wiim preamp trigger to a terminal block, and the 12v (-) to a another terminal block, and then used a diode as a flyback diode between the (+) and (-) terminal blocks. One (+) and (-) wire from each terminal block goes to the first programmable relay mentioned above. When any Wiim sends a 12v trigger signal, the magic happens.
