Usage

The Backbone(r) enables Handy 2 owners to use the STANLEY® MAXSTEEL® Multi-Angle Vice without having to directly clamp to the hardware.  1/4 20 (12mm long) screws are used to connect the Handy 2 to the Backbone(r).

Two models have been included with the same key dimensions. One has rounded curves that fit the Handy 2's aesthetics. The other is more angular, making it easier to print.

Buying the Backbone(r)

For the people who wandered over here that don’t have a 3d printer; I also sell an updated version of the Backbone(r). You can find it here.

I partnered up with 3DAPI, a company that prints the design locally. This lowers the shipping costs as import duties and international shipping can be circumvented.

Features

Several features have been implemented to make usage of the Backbone(r) more user friendly.

  • The indentations along the sides are made to  snugly fit the Stanley Vice jaws. This way minimal movement is guaranteed.

  • Buttons on the side are freely accessible.

  • Can be used upside down.

  • A hole had been added to allow the usb-c charging cable to be connected while the Handy 2 is being used.

  • No matter how the Backbone(r) is mounted, a slot at the back prevents the charging cable to get pinched.

  • Uses both mounting inserts for stability.

  • 1/4 20 screw holes in the top and bottom allow for extra hardware to be mounted.

New model

A third model has been added. Still compatible with the Stanley Vice but a rail has been added to be compatible with quick releases often found on tripods and other camera gear. This should make this version the ultimate all-round option for maximum flexibility. It should make it much less of a hassle of setting it up. The design had to be made a bit wider as a result but it still fits the Handy 2 aesthetic.

Printing

The models can be best printed on their backs. For more strength and aesthetic quality they can also be printed on their sides.  Version A benefits from this the most as it will prevent ugly layer lines in the first few layers. It does require bridging to be on point as the indentation for the vice is not touching the build plate.

Keep in mind that some forces will be exerted on the Backbone(r). A wall thickness of 3 with an infill of 15% is recommended. Printed with PETG but PLA should do fine.

Updates

27-11-2025

Made the C-model easier to print by adding fillets to the rail. The vertical mounting hole has also been changed to make nicer overhangs. This means no supports will be needed.

17-12-2025

Updated the C version to Backboner_C_V1.2. It has larger holes for higher diameter screws. Screw holes have also been widened to allow for some wiggle room.
