Description
Cranium and mandible of the Visible Human Female segmented by me from a computed tomography (CT) scan. I downloaded the “Aligned CT Dicom” provided here under CCBY 4.0 license and segmented the cranium and mandible separately in 3D Slicer. I made the models solid to simplify 3D printing, so there are no internal surfaces.
Cranium (14h7m):
Mandible (2h53m) (will fit on a small printer like the mini):
My models in the pics are printed with Sunlu matte PLA in bone white--matte PLA makes support removal much easier. I ended up with some ugly short seams on the occipital surrounding the overhang area--I tried different settings and rotating the cranium but the changes didn't affect those little short seams. Printing at 0.16 might reduce them a bit.
I added a little cylinder off to the side so I could raise the parts off the bed to prevent flattening of the bottom surfaces. Remove it if you want.
This CT scan is not high resolution, but I have tried to capture as much detail as I could see. Additionally, this individual was older so she has tooth loss and alveolar resorption as well as cranial suture obliteration.
This would make a great addition to a a skeletal collection for osteology, forensic anthropology, bioarchaeology, or biomedical courses especially to demonstrate age-related changes.
