Monument to Founders of Kyiv
Figures Depicted The legendary siblings: Kyi, Shchek, Khoryv, and their sister Lybid. (Kyiv is named after the eldest brother, Kyi).
Official Name Pamiatnyi znak na chest zasnuvannia mista Kyieva (Commemorative sign in honor of the founding of the city of Kyiv). It is often simply called "The Founders' Boat" or "Ladya."
Location Navodnytskyi Park, on the bank of the Dnipro River, Kyiv, Ukraine.
Completion Date May 22, 1982, in honor of the city's (traditional) 1500th anniversary.
Sculptor Vasyl Borodai.
Composition The four figures stand in a stylized boat, which rests atop a granite pedestal representing three waves. Sister Lybid is at the bow with outstretched arms.
Significance It is one of Kyiv's most recognizable symbols. It is a popular destination for wedding parties, with tradition holding that a newlywed's bouquet landing in the boat is a sign of future happiness.
