Description
Trying to sort items in bags when checking out at the grocery store can be a pain. You dont want have the heavy things roll onto the eggs and bread. Those little containers that fruit comes in like to fly open and sling blueberries across the floor at the slightest hint of side pressure. While checking out at the store i was feeling nostalgic for the old style that had the ears to hang these bags on the outside so the heavy things can be put inside.
Well, this is a solvable problem with 3D printing. So i took some basic measurements and made the rounds to my local stores to attempt to see how different the designs were. Turns out they are all reasobaly close with the exception of those red plastic ones at Target.
It took a few revisions to get the sizing to fit the slightly different versions around me and then adding some rubbing to prevent the hooks from sliding down the side of the cart while walking around with a load.
In the end this was what i came up with.
The hook is designed for printing it should be layed down on it's side as shown in the 3MF. Either side works as they are the same. No supports needed.
I have supported 2 gallons of milk with a PETG one so that's 17lbs(almost 8kg). I wouldn't imagine why you would want to do that… but it should support any reasonable loads without issue.
PETG/ABS is recommended only because I would imagine folks leaving them in the car more often than not. PLA works fine structurally though so if thats what you have it will do the job.
It seems questions on inside vs outside are coming up elswhere.
Yes you can hang them on the inside if there is room. This store in the picture has wide and shallow carts rather than tall thin ones. If you hang them insie then the bag sits on the bottom of the cart and totally defeats the point of the hook. The taller/depper ones inside could work fine and still serve the purpose.
There is a questionof hanging on the outside vs cart width. Generally you would hang these on the outside if the cart is full while you are checking out. You would not typically be walking around the aisles with a wide load. Empty bags while shopping hanging on the front possible but then as you load the bags you hang them away from each other and sort as needed.
In context for the pictures the shopping trip that made me want to design them there was no room on the inside and that is why the pictures above were on the outside. Since i had recently done a store haul with a lot of purchases once i designed them i did not need that much stuff. For this reason the pictures are not with a fully loaded cart.
