My Oakley sunglasses broke and it was more fun to design new ones than buy another pair. I found a terrific rendering by maarten weidema on grabcad and modified it to be 3D printable with M3 screw hinges and slots for lenses. I used ABS because sanding and acetone smoothing definitely helps polish them up. This is a work in progress so please let me know if you have any feedback!

Print settings:

  • ABS
  • 0.13 layer height
  • Precise wall enabled
  • 12 walls (mostly for the arms)
  • Tree supports (see pictures and notes below)
  • Brims

Support settings: I used tree supports with a threshold angle of 80 and on the build plate only. I used support painting to make sure no supports were placed in the slots for the lenses.

Hardware: (2) M3 x 8mm machine screws

Lenses: I bought cheap replacement lenses (link below for reference). These are notably thinner than my official Oakley lenses so be aware that official lenses may be tight or not fit. When inserting the lenses I found that starting at the top inside corner by the nose piece and slowly snapping in the rest worked best.

Decal: I added a pause and swapped to white for the top layers to get the pattern to show up. Then I glued it to the arm.
