Description

I saw a video of a plotter recently and thought why not use the printer as a plotter too? The result was this pen holder that fits on the front of my AB-BN Afterburner. I hope it also fits the original Afterburner. If not, the slightly parameterized Onshape model is available here.

It needs two M3 4mm thread inserts, two M3 bolts (I think I used 16mm with machine heads), some rubber bands and a pen. A cheap IKEA felt pen is used in the picture.

I printed the model in PLA with tree supports for the holes. It is probably not needed though.

To plot something with it, I first draw in Inkscape (or in this case, I just imported the Voron logo, resized it and put it in the right place) and saved as a svg file.

I homed the toolhead (without the pen attached!), ran QGL and then moved the toolhead to X150 Y50 Z8. Adjust the position for your printer's bed.

Then I put the pen in the penholder and let it drop down on the paper. I then tightened the screws and moved the toolhead to Z12. If you don't want a mark on the paper, use another paper of the same thickness here.

I used svg2gcode to convert the svg file to gcode. It can be used on this website. I used 0 as X the offset, 50 as the Y offset, "G1 Z8 F50000" as “Tool On Sequence” and “G1 Z10 F50000” as “Tool off sequence”. I set the feedrate to 3000 mm/min. Depending on the pen and the feed rate, you get different strong lines. In the picture with the text I used (from top to bottom) 300, 3000, 1000

I attached my paper with some small magnets and made sure the pen stayed away from them.

Have fun and please send pictures of some nice prints if you test this.
