The Atlantean Scion is the central artifact and main plot device in the original 1996 Tomb Raider and its 2007 remake, Tomb Raider: Anniversary.

Key Details

What it is: The Scion is a powerful ancient artifact from the lost civilization of Atlantis. It is not just a treasure but a key to immense power and a repository of Atlantean knowledge.

Origin: It was created by and divided among the three rulers (the "Triumvirate") of Atlantis: Qualopec, Tihocan, and Natla.

Appearance: When assembled, it is a single, complex device. However, Lara Croft seeks it in three separate pieces, each held by one of the original rulers.

Plot: Lara is initially hired by the businesswoman Jacqueline Natla (who is secretly the immortal Atlantean ruler) to find the Scion. Lara's quest takes her to three locations across the globe to retrieve the pieces:

Peru: In the Tomb of Qualopec.

Greece/Mediterranean: In the Tomb of Tihocan.

Egypt: In the Sanctuary of the Scion.

Significance: The Scion is the key to the Great Pyramid of Atlantis. Natla, having betrayed her fellow rulers in antiquity, seeks to use the Scion's power to "cleanse" the world by unleashing a new army of mutant creatures, ushering in a "Seventh Age." Lara must race to assemble the Scion first, ultimately confronting Natla and destroying the artifact to prevent the apocalypse.
