Description
I thought I would see how much an insulated head would effect the heating of my Taz5 Hexhead. I couldn't really tell much improvement in heating from room temp to 240C. I did notice about a 10 percent reduction in the rate of cooling. If you're pushing your extruder to the limit of it's ability to heat the filament then this could help you a little. Your performance may vary so give it a try.
Just wax the model of the head, paste wax or clear polish works well. This will help release the silicon. I just worked my way around the model putting a 2 to 3 mm coating. I had a little cup of Isopropyl Alcohol to dip my finger in to smooth out the applied silicon. I used J-B WELD Red Hi_Temp RTV on the final version but plain old clear silicon seem to handle the 240 degrees at least for a quick test.
After it sets up which can be over 24 hours you just need to trim it to fit on the model and slip it off. The pictures should explain the process well enough.
Cheers
Steve
