Design

I have several of the universal remote controls shown in the picture for opening and closing a gate. What bothered me about them was that I always had to fumble around to find the device and then press the right button. What I actually wanted was a fixed place in the car where I can press a button “blindly”.

The design presented here makes this possible. The 3D-printed housing can simply be attached at a suitable location using double-sided adhesive tape.

Printing

Rotate the parts so that the visible side faces downward on the print bed. The design is intended to be printed with a 0.4 mm nozzle, 0.20 mm layer height, and PETG or better. No supports are required.

The three small screws from the original remote are reused to close the housing—no additional material is needed. Instead of the printed button, you can also use one of the simple plastic buttons included in most Arduino kits. The advantage is that they light up from the LED mounted on the PCB.

Assembly

Remove the three screws from the original remote. Open the case and find the PCB with battery. Take care the battery is not falling down. Insert the button into the top housing element. Add the PCB so the button can trigger button A. Add the bottom housing part. Add the three small screws from the bottom. Add some force initially because the printed holes are very narrow.
