Description
Here are replacement drive gears for Athearn and also for Walters Life-Like Proto 2000 HO scale locomotives.
There are 2 files for the gears:
The "Original" file is the same exact total length as the Athearn gears, part # ATH60024.
The “Proto 2000” file is a slightly longer design which I came up. The longer design helps keep the square bushings in place better, and also creates a gap between the 2 wheels so that if the wheels get pushed together the wheel shafts cannot create a short circuit inside the printed gear. You may be able to use the “Proto 2000” gears in Athearn trains to get the same benefits, but I have not tested this.
Printing Instructions:
I printed these with a 0.2mm nozzle with PETG filament, 100% infill, and 4 walls. I selected the “Arachne” wall generator to get a much better printing result. The “classic” generator left gaps between the walls inside the gear teeth which made the part break easily.
These are designed to be a tight press fit, but I was still able to press them on by hand. After pressing them on I lightly grabbed the end of the gear shaft with pliers, and pulled the wheel out ever so slightly so the square brass bushing can rotate freely.
