Description

These are snowman ornaments that can be used to include a small gift or message inside, and which can also be used to hold potpourri (and dissipate the fragrance). There are 16 variations of the original design, depending on whether the year, “2025,” is at the bottom, and whether the hat has one hole for a ribbon, or two smaller holes for string hangers. Also, there are two potpourri back variations, in conjunction with the above variations, which are perforated with designs to allow for the potpourri fragrance to escape. See photos.

I have made and updated this design each year since 2020. This year has the following additions and modifications:

  • I made it so that the “2025” is clearer, and prints better.
  • I added the “String” version so that the ornament can be hung with string in a different way than with a ribbon; this also helps with printing when not using supports.
  • I tweaked the design a bit to make it easier to print without supports. The “String” versions are a little more reliable for this. The trouble area is the upper half of the hat on the “Ribbon” versions, because the hole would make it so that the small portion at the top of the hat initially is isolated from the rest of the model for many layers. Occasionally, the print would fail in that area, unless the model was printed with supports. I made the ribbon hole a little smaller, so that the top area gets connected faster to the main body of the model. However, if you still have a failure in this area, simply paint in a small quantity of supports in the upper half of the hat.
  • I also wanted the design to be printed without any brim. I changed the bevel a bit so that it reliably prints with no brim. I did print with one line of skirt, just to make sure the filament was flowing well.
  • I made the body parts have a higher side resolution, with more faces, so that they are smoother.
  • I figured that if someone wants to use potpourri, or another fragrance source, the ornament would work better with perforated backs. I left the fronts roughly the same, so that the face and coal buttons are still visible, which makes it more obvious that the model is of a snowman. The fragrance can escape out of the back. I thought it might be interesting to have multiple ornaments with pine scented potpourri randomly hung on an artificial Christmas tree. People would smell the tree…. :D

I printed with Bambu Basic PLA, White, 0.4mm nozzle, 0.20mm layer height, 3 walls/top & bottom layers, 15% Infill, and 1 line of skirt, no Supports or Brim. I think most people will have success with these parameters. As mentioned above, you can paint in a small quantity of support material just at the top half of the hat, if you are printing a ribbon version, but it probably isn't necessary with the new, smaller ribbon hole. Also, I printed on a Bambu textured PEI plate, so that the snowmen have that texture on their fronts.

NOTE: the two halves fit together with a friction fit. Once they are fully together, to separate them again, you will need to gently pry apart the halves. If you are able to release one of the connecting posts, you can rotate one half 180 degrees, pivoting on the more stuck post, and that helps break free that stuck post.
