Description

My grandmother liked my Parametric Pill Case for traveling, but wanted something bigger and more organized for multiple days of medication. I came up with this design using the same magnet-locks I used for the smaller case. This uses different-sized magnets compared to the initial release of the previous pill case, so be aware. Check out the Parts section below. Everything is parametric and variable-driven. If you'd like to edit anything, I've uploaded the STEP files and have linked the source Onshape document below.

Everything posted here is Public Domain, please do literally whatever you want with this!

  • The multiple magnets allow the part to have a stronger hold when both magnets are engaged (resulting in the “closed” position having the strongest “lock”)

  • A single magnet can hold the case in an “open” position with a weaker, single-magnet, hold

  • Modify all the sizes/tolerances through variables. Check out the Onshape document linked below for more information.

Updates

  • v1.1.0 (FreeCAD Document Only)

    • Model now uses 10mm x 1.6mm magnets. The original magnets were too big and made it annoying for my grandmother to open, so I swapped to a smaller version.

      • If you need to change the magnet sizes, you can do use by modifying the VarSet and changing the MagnetDiameter and MagnetHeight variables.

    • Better dovetail interface

      • v1.0.0 used a rudimentary 99% Scale operation.

      • v1.1.0 uses a PillLidDovetailMargin variable to add tolerance to the lid.

    • Known Issues:

      • The PillLid and PillLidLabelBase have no tolerance margin whatsoever. This can require sanding the edges of each part to get them to slide cleanly.

      • This will be fixed in an upcoming version.

  • v1.2.0 - UNTESTED

    • Model now uses PillLidCoverMargin to improve the tolerance between lid parts. The original v1.0.0 OnShape version used the 99% scale operation, but the v1.0.0 and v1.1.0 FreeCAD ports didn't have any margin, resulting in a frustrating experience. This has been solved.

    • Model uses the v1.1.0 magnet sizes (10mm x 1.6mm).

    • Changed label font to monaspace (OFL 1.1).

    • I will be printing a test of this model soon, but can't guarantee it will work until then.

Prints

  • 1x - PillSlot - This is the main body of the WIDE Pill Case

  • 7x - PillLid - These are the doors that slide onto the PillSlot holes

  • OPTIONAL

    • 7x - PillLidLabelBase - You can use these as base objects to add text/logos/etc to in your slicer to label the PillLids. I used PrusaSlicer to add text, then added a filament change to get the black-text-on-white-background color scheme. You will need to glue these parts onto the PillLids.

      • These are separate parts to ensure all pieces can print without supports. If you have a better idea, please remix and post it!!

Parts

Magnet sizes have changed between versions to make it easier to open.

  • v1.0.0: 28x 12mm x 3mm disc magnets

  • v1.1.0: 28x 10mm x 1.6mm disc magnets

  • v1.2.0: 28x 10mm x 1.6mm disc magnets

Yes, you will need 28 magnets!

Assembly

  • DOUBLE CHECK THE MAGNET ORIENTATION BEFORE SOCKETING THE MAGNETS

    • You can remove the magnets by prying them out, but you'll need to tear up some of the plastic in the process. Possible, but messy and potentially dangerous. Take some time, make sure they're aligned.

  • The magnets on the slots and lid parts should be oriented to pull each part together.

  • The magnet sockets are press-fit, so smush and wiggle the magnet discs into the sockets on the parts

  • Slide the lids into the slots on the larger PillSlot part.

  • OPTIONAL - PillLid Labels

    • See full explanation in the Prints section above.

    • Glue PillLidLabelBases onto the PillLids to get a clean, labeled look.

Print Settings

  • Support: None

    • Each part prints with the flat side on the bed, very mild overhangs on the PillSlot dovetail slots, but you don't need support for these.

  • Filament: (almost) anything

    • I used PLA

  • Perimeters: 3

    • Increase this to increase part strength

  • Infill: 10% Gyroid

    • I used 15% to add some weight

Source CAD

I used Onshape for this design and you can find the public document here:
https://cad.onshape.com/documents/5c0538eb87b2b086d44e895c/v/3993f801077b5bbf21c6472e/e/2f8a2fb0fa432662a0257e6a?renderMode=0&uiState=692694ea7d174e14d110a7d5

You should be able to modify most variables in the document to control the model, make it bigger, resize the magnet sockets, or make a version with less slots, etc. You can then right-click on the part names in the list on the left side to export them as STLs/STEP files.

I have since ported this CAD design to FreeCAD to make modifications easier. You can download it in the Model files section.

Filament Used
