Description
I use some of the KOZIOL [pi:p] bird feeder for years in the garden. They have a great design and space for several days' worth of birdseed. But…
- If the feeder is hung in an open, uncovered spot—which makes sense to protect it from cats—rain or snow gets in through the openings and sticks to the seed.
- The bottom of the feeder is very flat, and the last bits of seed don't slide out to where the birds can reach them.
To solve these two problems, I designed these improvements, which are easy to print and attach.
- To prevent rain and snow from soaking and sticking to the food, I added small canopies above the openings that slide easily into the top and clamp themselves in place.
- The problem of feed not sliding down properly is solved by a small cone that is simply placed over the center spike inside the house. The cone is a compromise between slope and loss of space for the feed. To make the feed slide even better, it could certainly be made with a significantly larger diameter.
Printing tips:
The canopies are exposed to weather and UV light. It is recommended to print them from ABS, ASA, or PC. They have a very detailed profile to fit the feeder. So a 0.4 mm nozzle is recommended. The inner cone is weatherproof and can be printed from any material. I used PETG (Prusament Recycled) and a 0.6 nozzle for a more stable part.
