Description

I was looking to refresh my guitar, an Ibanez electric, which has level but dull frets and a seriously dry fretboard. I had most of the tooling, but was missing something to help crown/polish the frets. So I found @FungalAudio's model, which looked very close to what I wanted.

Design / implementation

I edited it to have a round profile where the abrasive paper fits between the tool and the fret. It is meant to fit Ibanez's jumbo frets, which are approximately 2.9mm diameter and 1.4mm proud of the fretboard. For this purpose, I scaled the rounded scallop to account for a 0.2mm thick abrasive paper and the whole cut is moved so that the tool with the paper does not sit on the fretboard.

See below for the diagram of the rounded scallop of the tool.

  • Offset: raises the tool from the fretboard (0.60mm in the example)

  • Gap: Thickness of the abrasive paper + 0.05mm tolerance added to the fret radius (0.30mm to a 1.75mm radius in the example)

Printing Notes

I am printing at 0.10mm layer height with supports to achieve a reasonably round profile by printing the part with the profile facing down. But it still needs filing with a small round file to clean up the profile, which may affect the radius... I am thinking how best to print it with the rounded profile sitting vertically to achieve a better result but haven't tried yet. It may just work.
